Bansko

Bansko was full of life this weekend. I’ve never seen more people there in the summer in over 20 years of frequent visits.

Prices were adjusted accordingly.

It was nice and rained, unlike everywhere else. Sofia is like a hot brick in comparison.

When All the Girls Have Gone

When All the Girls Have Gone is a crime thriller by Jayne Ann Krentz. It’s flagged “Romantic Suspense” on Goodreads but there’s not much romance in it. There’s some in the continuation “Promise Not to Tell”. I picked the book primarily for the good name and wanted to learn what happens next. It reminded me of Harlan Coben. The book was more of a Cormoran Strike story than a Harlan Coben story but it didn’t disappoint.

Women from an investment club start dying and disappearing, and the sister of one of these women rolls up her sleeves to find out what’s going on. Around ten intertwined events take place, tangled like a mess of wires, where everything causes everything else.

About 20 years ago, the main characters survived a deadly fire. A young cult leader had locked the cult’s children in a barn and set it ablaze. They were rescued by a local cop who crashed through the door with his car. The cult’s secrets remain unsolved, forming the central mystery of the series.

Overall, not a bad thriller, and Part 2, which I’m currently reading, is better.

Positive Emotions

Daily writing prompt
What positive emotion do you feel most often?

My most common positive emotion these days is the sense of accomplishment when completing a todo item. Walking outdoors, blogging, and reading books are related to that feeling. I count my steps and the number of books I read. I keep a blogging streak and enjoy every comment.

Also, cat videos. Here’s a cat for you. No video of her because she was busy not doing anything.

Emergency Preparedness

Daily writing prompt
Create an emergency preparedness plan.

I only see a point in preparing for small, family-level emergencies. The big stuff I’d leave to the government. We stocked up some toilet paper and Fusilli during the early days of COVID-19. That didn’t work well.

My lifestyle includes playing football and doing weekly hikes. This means injuries, bites, and weather risk.

  • Bites and stings by insects can be quite risky when they get infected, and I feel like anything that’s not a mosquito bite gets infected. We keep a good supply of cremes, patches, and bandages for people of all sizes – from Paw Patrol-themed to large and cheap for fallen fathers.
  • I now have a backpack that has a reusable water bottle, a windbreaker jacket, and a scarf that can cover the entire face. This makes me prepared for things going slightly south with the weather during hikes.

Why scarf? The idea is that a sudden change in weather can come with strong winds, making it impossible to walk if the face is not fully covered. People lose most of their heat from the head. Keep the face warm and comfortable, and the sudden snow might not be as bad.

TL;DR – my emergency preparedness plan includes large amounts of treatments for wounds, a scarf, and a credit card.
