I started building a walking habit about 2 years ago. I had this crazy annual goal to average over 10K steps per day for the whole of 2024. Happy to share that I could make it with room to spare.

Life is much easier if you don’t need to count your steps every day. It takes time and is often unpleasant. I tried all sorts of tricks, from waking early to spinning the treadmill in the evening. It was all inconvenient. Was it worth it – probably yes. Walking is like mild gym plus mindfulness combined. It unlocked hiking not just for me but also for my family. Helped me with the blog as well – lots of cool things and cats are just hanging out, waiting to be spotted.
My fitness goal for 2025 will be more complex.
- I’ll try to climb Vihren (2 failed attempts in 2024)
- I’ll try to keep an average of 10k/day for 2025 as well but increase the difficulty by doing more hiking and less city
- I’ll try to add 1h/week of gym time, starting with body weight exercises like push-ups and plank. The 1h comes from the 7-minute-workout, 7×7 is 49, or roughly 1h. The idea is to build a habit this year rather than achieve any weight loss or body composition change.
Wish me luck.
Quite an achievement! Congratulations!

Thanks! Do you have any fitness goals?

My step goal is 7,500 steps a day. I try to take a minimum 45 minutes walk five times a week. My cardiologist wants me to try to increase my walking pace, so I’m trying to work on that. One of my heart valves doesn’t work properly, so I have incentive to stay fit. I want to avoid valve replacement surgery if I can.

I hope walking helps you stay out of the hospital. I tried a few different doctors until I found one who encouraged me to be active, although he refused to tell me what type of exercise is safe. He mostly explained what’s unsafe. Walking works so far.

It’s excellent, the consistency is great. I’m trying the same with not so great results – I struggle with the days when the weather is bad

I got nice shoes and going out became less intolerable but yes, the struggle with bad weather is real for me too.

Given that the shoes are the only part of my equipment that’s waterproof, I pretty much soak wet in about 1h of walking under rain/snow. Still better than nothing 🙂
Welcome to my “new” blog 🙂

It’s great, I’ve been reading it sporadically for the last several days. I found it by catching a notification from an answer you posted on Quora

Oh, Quora. I’m experimenting with ways to promote the blog. It’s very hard for me to reach any of my friends. When I post on Facebook or Twitter with a link, it’s like speaking to the void.

I’ve found a great community on LinkedIn

And yes, seems social networks nowadays penalize posts with links. It’s a known fact for LinkedIn, and Musk has admitted so for X/Twitter. It’s best to “hide” the links in the comments away from the algos
