What would you do?

A single baby shoe on the sidewalk.

I’ve been the parent searching for the tiny shoe in the past. I think the best strategy when seeing a tiny shoe is to not touch it, it increases the chance that it’s found compared to if you put it on a visible place. I’ve managed to find the lost shoe several hours after it was lost but this one time a Good Samaritan put it on top of an anti-parking bollard – I had to walk back and forth to the store two or three times because I didn’t expect it to be there.

While wondering what to do, a mom showed up and found it.

  1. This has always been so fascinating to me. On my walks and runs, I’ve encountered single baby shoes, single running shoes, single hiking boots, single sandals..but also entire pairs of all of the above.

I always assume that when I’m on the trail that closely parallels a major highway or street, it’s probably someone who was dangling their foot out the car window and then the wind blew the shoe off and into the road and they didn’t bother to come back for it. And then the others, well, especially baby shoes — like you said, they come off a lot. But entire adult shoes? Good ones?

    Fascinating.

  2. We call limbs hanging out of car windows “immortal arms” and “immortal legs” because it’s not very safe, especially during an accident. People yolo and do it. I think losing a shoe is a good outcome compared to what would happen if the airbags deployed
