The Horse and His Cars

This is one of the most iconic places in Sofia, we used to call it “The Horse”. When I was a kid, I would frequently be asked which leg of the horse is up. When you think about it, there’s a horse and some dude on it, but are the legs up? Nobody knows.

Right there is where all the protests tend to go. The horse acts like a natural scene, and the symbolic parliament building is on the other side.

I’d like to see this parking turn into a walkable space, even if for the sake having better photos.

  1. I took a look at the Sofia cityscape with the mountain in the background. I see why you dislike the cars-like you, we are stuck in a mountain valley that holds all the particulate matter produced by human beings. Excepting the age of the cities, and the much greater cultural heritage you enjoy, I think you might feel at home in Reno, Nevada. Ever try snowboarding?

    1. I dislike cars because driving everywhere contributed to me getting sick. Now I know it was a silly thing to do. I had people telling me that before but it felt impossible to do anything without a car and I believed visiting the gym was enough to stay in shape. I can now easily do 20K in the mountain. Still very far from my best shape but it feels good to make progress.

I used to ski. Never been on a snowboard. We gave up the ski with the first kid.

      1. Where did you go that made you sick? Or was it just lack of physical exercise? We often spend all our time indoors and don’t even realize it. I’m very proud of you for breaking those barriers. We have to drive half and hour just to go to work. It is beautiful and the beauty is inspirational, but it’s a long ways and it’s also getting more and more crowded. I would like to not have to drive at all, but we’re just too far out in the country. If you want to see how far, The Misfits, the last film by Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, was filmed where I live now. It’s a good movie. Depressing, but good.

      2. The time spent behind the wheel is time not spent walking, running or doing something active. Took me way too long to understand the math of that. Doing 2K steps per day? That’s 20 minutes of activity and 23h and 40 minutes of inactivity.

The lack of movement is bad for the cardiovascular health, and from there, bad for everything else as well. Some people can reach old age with nothing breaking, others are less lucky.
