Bulgaria has lots of hills and mountains. There’s not much farming going on on the hills, maybe a goat or two here and there. This particular hill is not in a great shape. Reforested in the 30s, not actively maintained, and illegally harvested. I was surprised to see something fragile and pretty just blossoming against all odds.
We see them here in Wales too, where people have stopped using chemical fertilizers. Also, cowslips are making a comeback which is great.

I think I was just not paying attention before. I doubt the environment is any cleaner, given how few bugs and beetles I see.

You may be right but I like to think there’s still hope – and encourage and support farmers and growers who are trying to make a difference.
