I don’t want to retire. My plan is to follow in my mom’s footsteps. She works in her 70s and I admire her for that.
I believe a person needs a reason to leave the bed in the morning, and working is a good reason to be awake, especially if you work on something you believe in. You keep the brain occupied with meaningful goals so it’s not occupied with other things like anxiety and problems. The brain doesn’t like to stay empty, it will fill itself quickly if left unattended. I also believe that you lose what you don’t use.
Retirement doesn’t sound appealing. There’s no remote island, beach, or resort where I’d rather be.
We both gave up work in our mid-50s. For years, we had our own hotel with 85 rooms in a good city center location. Financially, everything was always excellent, but at some point we couldn’t stand the people anymore. If you meet 100 new faces every day and 30% of them are idiots or assholes, at some point you become a misanthrope and don’t want to see anyone anymore. We haven’t been working for two years now and are only concerned with ourselves, with art and culture. Working again? Yes – but only without humans 🙂

The hotel business sounds tough. I won’t add opening a central hotel to the list of my life goals unless the check-in is fully automated 🙂

There are 2 types of hotel i would like to open again someday…: Low-Budget-NO-Service (rush in, sleep, shower, grab a coffee, leave) or high-end-super-luxury with a georgeous restaurant and a premium cocktail bar with cigar lounge. But i would kick out each guest that i don´t like 🙂 on the spot 🙂 Work for money does not make sense, only work for fun and enjoyment makes sense. Money is nothing…

If I ever will START to work, I’d be forced to work to probably 70 at least, but I’d probably want to work for a longer period than that as well, since I’ve barely worked at all in my life.
I dread if I’d go into early retirement, but if I don’t get a job soon, I’ll burn myself out completely and I’d be forced to go on disability checks until I retire for real. Such a waste with my time/life and my competence if that’s the case.

I have faith in you. You can do it, with this job or the next.

Thank you. I hope so too. As long as I get the chance, I will rock their socks off! I prove that already. I just wish the clients would realize that I’m not a burden, but a great addition to a team.

Of course you’re not a burden even if that’s not immediately appreciated!

To retire early and make money writing poetry would be a dream.

It might be more pleasurable to just have the money.

Nice post with good reasons not to retire!
As I was getting ready to comment, up popped a tweet from Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, (@NOIweala) the Director-General of World Trade Organization (WTO) thanking folks for her 70th birthday! The “young lady” looks so fine and energetic and still has a lot to give to the people. I said that to attest your post. 😊
