Okay! The moment I’ve been waiting for, the 2025 awards for best books on Veselin.blog 😀 These are not written in 2025, only read this year, but who cares?
Best Thriller
- Frieda McFadden’s The Housemaid – first exposure to Frieda McFadden was a shock to me. Being stuck with Lee Child-like characters for so long created space for this pleasant surprise. Looking forward to seeing the movie.
Best Apocalypse & Sci-Fi
- Wool by Hugh Howey – Juliette will figure out how the Silo works.
Best Non-Fiction
- Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams – a personal account of the earlier days of Facebook. Inspired me to post twice.
Best Fantasy and Best Author
- The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin and The Obelisk Gate by N. K. Jemisin. The thrid part is not translated yet but the first two were both best books I read in the months I finished them. Nora Jemisin was the best author I encountered this year with four five-star books out of four. It was a close call with Nicci French but they had some disappointing books.
Best Series
- Freida Klein by Nicci French – 8 consistently strong books about the criminal psychologist Freida Klein.
Best Sci-Fi and Best Book
- Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir – I described it as deeply touching. A book that stays with you, although not unique in any way.
Overall, I finished 91 books, according to Goodreads (a few more because not all books are on Goodreads). It was a good year for reading.
wow!! that’s a lot of books!! i’m so impressed!

Thanks! It’s a period. I didn’t watch many movies or tv last year. Do you read books?

I’m still building up steam, but hope to read as many as that this year.
Good job. I’ll have to look at Gideon again with a new and improved attitude. I started it, but got distracted by something frivolous and never got back to it.
Here’s to breaking 100 books for you this year. 🥂

You know how it is with books. One man’s best can be another man’s DNF. The translation is great. The original English writing may not be. I also read the part 2 (in English) and it wasn’t as good.

I know how it is. I am determined to be less stubborn about finishing books I’m not grooving with this year so I can focus on those that hit the mark. But I am still tempted by that one, so I’ll give it another whirl. Sometimes it isn’t the book, sometimes it is my current mood.

Yep, insisting on finishing books that don’t click causes reader blocks

Thanks, Veselin! I hope so. By the way, I started a new blog called Work BTS, where I plan to connect with real people and publish interviews about the tools and work routines they use to get things done. I would love to feature you! Interested?
