Reading books again

Daily writing prompt
What book could you read over and over again?

My kids would watch the same TV episode over and over, knowing every scene by heart, and still enjoy it. I used to be like that with books until my late teenage years. I’ve read The Three Musketeers, Foundation, and Starship Troopers many times, perhaps 10+ times each, and the list of books I’ve read 3-4 times is also lengthy. However, the desire to reread books has since disappeared. No matter how good a book is, there’s always another book that might be as good and is also new to me.

I read “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” about 3 times as an adult. It might be the best answer I can give.

      1. “Foundation” is a very tiny and mind-blowing book. Asimov suggested that people read the full series for the Robots before reading Foundation but I read “Foundation” first and it was okay.

The only problem with that reading order is that the supporting character of the robot Daneel Olivaw (a female robot helping the emperors in the Foundation TV show) is not introduced.

    1. Yeah, particularly the first 4-5 chapters where the characters discover each other and start making small wins. Then it all goes downhill with Milady.

    1. Yes, it is, especially if you’re in the late teens. The world is so simple there. This book has 2 siblings, one of which is from another mother.

I pair it with The Forever War and Forever Peace. I probably read these 3 in the 10s of times each as well.

  1. I definitely read a lot more books that I’ve never read than books I’m rereading. But, I do love the comfort of a well loved book. It’s definitely like rewatching a favorite movie for me. But, I can also totally understand the desire to reach for those books you haven’t gotten to experience yet.

  2. I’ve got comfort books that I keep rereading all the time. Like Alice in Wonderland for example – I know it by heart! Or anything Pratchett. And Agatha Christie. And P. G. Wodehouse. Gerald Durrell, the Murderbot series, Gaiman, Douglas Adams, Gibson, Stephenson, Michael Marshall Smith, Jane Eyre (I was a kid when I got obsessed with this book, I don’t know why; but I have to admit that currently I am skipping the part about her life in the school), some romance books that make me feel good, like the chocolate series by Laura Florand (Paris, hot French chocolatiers, witty dialogues, these books are so warm and calm and relaxing), the Valeri Petrov translations of the Shakespeare comedies, the Steel Rat stories…

    1. To quote Heinlein, I’m only an egg 🙂 You read a lot more than me. Would you mind adding me as a friend on Goodreads if you use it? I checked and we are not friends there.

Your list definitely brings up a few more books that I’ve reread 3 or more times as an adult: The Hitchkicker’s collection (the green one), Hobbit, LOTR, and a few select books by Pratchett. I was also a big fan of Valeri Petrov’s Shakespeare comedies, however, not sure if it counts since I would reread these each summer break and at some point I ran out of summer breaks.

And, lol, maybe Pippi Longstocking 🙂
